The honest answer is not one number. Pantone maintains multiple systems and libraries for different materials, and the same color designation can have different physical formats and digital representations.
The broadest current number
Pantone describes its digital platform as providing access to more than 15,000 colors across its libraries. That broad figure combines systems intended for different industries and materials, so it should not be confused with the number in one printed graphics guide.
Graphics and the Pantone Matching System
Pantone’s current color-systems overview states that the graphics PMS system contains 9,758 colors after a recent addition of 294 colors. This umbrella includes libraries and formats beyond the familiar solid-coated fan guide.
Fashion, Home + Interiors
Pantone separately reports 3,049 colors in the Fashion, Home + Interiors system after adding 315 colors. FHI references are designed around textiles, pigments, and coatings rather than the print-graphics conditions behind PMS references.
Why online charts show different totals
Independent charts often contain an older public dataset, only coated and uncoated solid references, or duplicate C and U simulations.
