HOW MATCHING WORKS

From one pixel to
a useful shortlist.

The selected sRGB pixel is translated into CIE L*a*b*, then compared with every digital reference in the local library. The closest perceptual distances are shown first, including separate coated and uncoated simulations.

Photography changes color: lighting, white balance, exposure, compression, camera profiles, reflections, and surface texture all affect the sampled pixel. Use a controlled measurement workflow for critical physical matching.

Start with a trustworthy image

Use a sharp, evenly lit photograph without strong reflections or automatic filters. A color-calibrated target photographed beside the object can help correct white balance and exposure. Screenshots and compressed social images may already contain altered colors.

Sample more than one pixel

Real surfaces contain texture, shadows, highlights, noise, and print dots. Click several representative areas and compare the resulting shortlists. A median or visually central sample is usually more useful than the brightest or darkest pixel.

Separate coated and uncoated results

A close C result and a close U result represent different substrate simulations. Choose the library that fits the final material instead of selecting whichever swatch happens to look best on your monitor.

Image matching is not physical measurement

A camera records light through a lens, sensor, processing pipeline, and embedded color profile. The photograph also records the illuminant and the object’s surface behavior. Gloss, fluorescence, metallic particles, transparency, and texture can make two materials with a similar sampled RGB value behave very differently in the real world.

For early creative work, image matching is excellent for producing a shortlist. For brand control, packaging, textiles, coatings, or manufacturing, use a spectrophotometer or another controlled measurement method supported by the production workflow. Then compare the measured result with current official Pantone standards and approve a physical sample.

A practical image-to-Pantone workflow

  1. Photograph under neutral, even light.Avoid mixed daylight and artificial light, deep shadows, and direct glare.
  2. Keep automatic processing modest.Disable beauty filters, vivid modes, and aggressive HDR where possible.
  3. Upload the image locally.The file remains in browser memory and is not submitted to our server.
  4. Sample several representative points.Compare the five nearest references returned for each point.
  5. Choose the correct material system.Do not use a graphics-paper reference as a substitute for a textile or product standard.
  6. Verify with a physical standard.Use the shortlist to narrow the search, then make the production decision offline.
