Reliable print color comes from a chain of controlled decisions, not from finding a magical conversion value.

01

Define the destination first

Before adjusting color, identify the print process, stock, finish, printer, and output profile. A coated offset sheet and an uncoated digital print are different destinations.

02

Calibrate the view

Use a reasonably calibrated display, controlled ambient light, and a soft-proof setup. Avoid judging subtle color on a phone in automatic brightness mode.

03

Protect the source

Keep an editable master with its source profile. Make output-specific copies when converting, sharpening, trapping, or imposing. This preserves flexibility for future production methods.

04

Proof the risky colors

Spend proofing effort where the job is vulnerable: brand colors, neutrals, skin tones, dark gradients, saturated hues, and large flat areas. Approve against a stated standard under appropriate light.

Production note: Specifications vary. Confirm profiles, ink limits, paper, proof type, and export settings with the print provider responsible for the job.
