HOW IT WORKS
Your HSL value is normalized into CIE L*a*b*, a device-independent space designed for comparing perceived color. We calculate the distance to every stored coated and uncoated reference and return the three nearest results.

The matcher ranks simple CIE76 ΔE values. Lower is closer within this dataset. Use the ranking to create a shortlist, then judge the candidates in the actual medium.
Coated C and uncoated U references describe different paper contexts. Always pass the complete code to a printer or collaborator so the intended library is unambiguous.
HSL reorganizes an sRGB color into hue, saturation, and lightness. It is convenient for adjusting interface colors, but equal numeric changes do not always produce equal-looking changes to the eye.
The Pantone Matching System is a proprietary numbering system used in design and production. A Pantone spot ink can produce colors that a four-color process or an sRGB display cannot reproduce. Even when a screen value looks close, the physical sample may change with ink film, paper whiteness, coating, texture, lighting, and age of the reference guide.
