Match, not equivalence
Color systems are not interchangeable dictionaries. This result identifies nearby stored digital values, not an official cross-system formula or a promise that two physical samples will match.
INDEPENDENT PANTONE MATCHER
Find the closest Pantone digital references to a RAL Classic reference using perceptual color distance.
Example: RAL 3020
HOW IT WORKS
Your RAL value is normalized into CIE L*a*b*, a device-independent space designed for comparing perceived color. We calculate the distance to every stored coated and uncoated reference and return the three nearest results.
Color systems are not interchangeable dictionaries. This result identifies nearby stored digital values, not an official cross-system formula or a promise that two physical samples will match.
The matcher ranks simple CIE76 ΔE values. Lower is closer within this dataset. Use the ranking to create a shortlist, then judge the candidates in the actual medium.
Coated C and uncoated U references describe different paper contexts. Always pass the complete code to a printer or collaborator so the intended library is unambiguous.
RAL Classic is a physical color collection widely used for coatings, architecture, and industrial products. A screen representation can help shortlist a reference but cannot reproduce the material, gloss, or measured standard.
The Pantone Matching System is a proprietary numbering system used in design and production. A Pantone spot ink can produce colors that a four-color process or an sRGB display cannot reproduce. Even when a screen value looks close, the physical sample may change with ink film, paper whiteness, coating, texture, lighting, and age of the reference guide.
A RAL input describes a RAL Classic reference. It does not carry a Pantone ink formulation, so the tool compares appearance rather than decoding a hidden Pantone number.
The tool translates the RAL value to CIE L*a*b* and compares it with 3,217 coated and uncoated digital Pantone references. It returns the three shortest color distances.
No. It is an independent nearest-color comparison using approximate screen values. Official Pantone data and current physical guides should be used for production decisions.
Screens emit RGB light while physical standards reflect light. Display calibration, substrate, finish, ink, lighting, and production conditions all affect appearance.
C identifies a coated-paper graphics reference and U identifies an uncoated-paper graphics reference. They are separate standards and their digital simulations may differ.
It is the straight-line distance between two CIE L*a*b* values in this tool. A smaller number means the stored digital values are closer, but it is not a production tolerance or proof approval.
